Now this time of year all birds and animals struggle to find food and woodpeckers are no different! At the apairy there are some green woodpeckers around and they've taken a fancy to the hive!

Now woodpeckers can destroy a colony- they peck through the walls of the hive to get inside and eat any bees or stores they can find. luckily we caught the damage just before they broke through the walls. We then set about building a defense around the hive to stop further attacks and damage. We've built a metal cage around the hive which will keep the woodpeckers away!

The bees are still active as the weather has been quite mild, and we definitely had a few guard bees come and check out what we were up to!
