Neonics are back!
This month the UK have overturned the EU decision to ban Neonicotinoids. Theres currently an 'emergency' ruling in for use on sugar beet seeds. I say 'emergency' as this could last up to two years!
Now I understand farmers need to protect their crops however I don't agree that this is the way forward. Also sugar beet crops last year suffered no less than other crops due to exceptional weather conditions. Now you may be thinking why is she bothered? After all sugar beet doesn't flower however neonicotinoids seep into soil and can affect and therefore be transmitted through neighbouring weeds and flowers and therefore affecting our bees. The use of pesticides is more than just a struggle for our bees, it's a challenge to all our nature. They seep into soil, into the water tables, into rivers that our fish swim in, out to the ocean. They seep into nectar, into insects which our birds eat. Into seeds and onto your plate. Also if this exception can be made for one it can be made for others!
DEFRA are currently running a public consultation regarding the use of pesticides I encourage you to read and comment. Think about the future of our planet and what we are putting into the soil and potentially the food chain!
